Roma flying medical services to be slashed, claims Hobbs

1/09/2008 6:00:00 PM
LNP MP Howard Hobbs claims the State Government intends to slash and burn the Flying Surgeon and Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Services based at Roma.

In State Parliament this week Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg tabled a leaked report, which the LNP says outlines plans to cease the flying surgical and obstetric services in Southern Queensland.

Mr Hobbs said it is ludicrous that the State Labor Government should seek to remove a service which has a track record of saving lives and helping local doctors to do the same.

"The Government should be looking at replicating the service model in other regions rather than closing it down," Mr Hobbs said.

"After all isn't it the primary objective of any health service to save lives where ever possible?

"It is disgraceful and insulting to women in regional Queensland to be forced to travel for medical help where major public hospitals are in meltdown with no beds or doctors where they are forced to wait and wait."

What will they take from us next? I know of many in our community who have had to use this service due to emergencies, my husband being one. It terrifies me to think that had we not had this service, my husband might not still be with us. I also know of many more such incidents that could have had a very different outcome if we all had to travel many hours further to receive medical treatment. What price does this goverment put on a life? Obviously those of us in the bush don't seem to matter anymore.

If these proposed changes occur, women will die. My life was saved by these services in February. If I have the same problems next February, I would not be alive to write this message! It's just another stab in the back for the state/country's food providers.
